This week, we focused on upgrading the quality of our library by aggressively ingesting music (om nom nom). This involved pulling several stacks of music CDs from storage and re-digitizing them. For those unaware, we previously stored music as high-bitrate mp3 files. This process replaces those files with a lossless format, meaning they sound the same as if one were listening to the original CD itself.

There’s a long list of circles that we went through this week, and they are:

Alstroemeria Records
Aqua Style
Area Zero

Alongside our focus on music this week, we also started work on phase three which involves providing multi-regional service. For those unfamiliar with our phases list, we introduced this back during Live #106 and began implementing things last summer. Currently, we’re in what we called “phase two,” or colocation paired with increasing the volume and quality of music we have on the backend (basically what we did this week). The reason we’re moving forward with phase three (multi-regional services) is due to the way our service currently works with Cloudflare.

In order to provide our service, Cloudflare currently proxies all of our web and streaming data. This was not our original intent. To fix this, we’re in the process of deploying additional servers around the world to increase service stability, decrease latency (for more than just the audio stream), and to provide additional bandwidth for lossless when it becomes available. Our provider will function as the backbone to a new global radio service network, providing more direct access for our listeners around the world. Removing traffic from Cloudflare’s network will also significantly reduce the burden we’re placing on their network.

That’s all for this week, come back this weekend for our next Live show (announcement pending), and thanks for listening!
